Food Product Development Launching Day was introduced by Prof Dr Salmah Yusof in 2008. This event has already been held for 5 consecutive years by the Faculty of Science & Technology, and the year 2013 marked the 6th year for this event. Organized by 2nd year Food Biotechnology students with the help of the first years from the same course, this event is very highly anticipated by 3rd year Food Biotechnology students who take the New Product Development subject (SBT 3013).
Throughout the course, students are guided to produce new food product innovation that will satiate the crowd, can incorporate and emphasize nutritional values and can be commercialized. This one day event is held to achieve the following objectives:
- To prompt the students to apply what they have learned to produce said innovative products.
- To highlight the creativity and ideas of the students through the creation of new products and improvement of existing products.
- To create a platform to introduce the innovative food products that meet the latest market requirements, are nutritious, and are potentially ready to be commercialized.
- To train the students to manage projects and arrange the appropriate market strategies to place their products in local and global markets.
Administrative Review
The 2013 Food Product Launching Day by the Faculty of Science and Technology is an event that has academic assessment for the New Product Development course (SBT 3013 - Kursus Pembangunan Produk Baru).
Apart from academic purposes, the innovative food products will act as 'feeders' for the University Sains Islam Malaysia Students Innovation Competition 2013 and the National Research Innovation Competition at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang which will happen soon.
The event is also consistent with USIM Key Result Area points which means it will help to upgrade USIM’s academic quality and relevancy in the current state of national education (USIMKRA4 - to establish the innovative human capital).
